When I Realized that I Suck at TBR and Am Trying Something New For July

I have made TBRs before but I have a love/hate relationship with them. As a person that rides the waves of emotion in picking what I read I’ve always felt a little strange picking exact books I’m going to read for a month. I do okay with sticking to a TBR but I always feel bad when I don’t feel in the mood to read a book that I said I was going to and if I force myself to read it I end up not enjoying it and that equals a lower rating. So I came up with something that is a little different for July that will work for me better.

Instead of assigning specific books I’m going to read for July, I’m going to make a July Reading Goals list. First, I’m going to divide these into three categories; reading goals, blogging goals, and both. I need to step up my game because I love blogging but I am a “fly by the seat of my pants” kind of blogger and I feel like this has hindered me greatly in the goals I do have long term for my blog.

Reading Goals

Read three books for review

I have accumulated a lot of books for review and A LOT of them come out in the next few months and I want to keep on track with them.

Read 2 Debut Authors

I want to support debut authors and what better way of doing that then reading their books and promoting them? I met some really cool ones at my trip to ALA and I’m so jazzed at being able to read them.

Read 2 Library Books

I have a library addiction and even though I’ve recently moved to a town that is less stocked with books than my last town that hasn’t seemed to stop me from checking out books. So I need to do something about that.

Blog Goals

Write down the books that I finish

This goes here because when the end of the month comes around even though I say I’m going to read certain books I end up reading more and I forget them. I know, I know, how? I don’t know but I do and can never actually recap the month because of it.

Post Every Other Day or just more regularly

have a sporadic schedule and I have just learned the fine art of scheduling posts so this might be a little bit easier. But combined with a few of the other topics here I still have the small issue of content to post. But, I am not giving up and I have a few cool ideas coming up to help with this problems.

Just become more fucking organized

This is self explanatory and probably will be on my goals list for each month. I am absolutely horrible at this and is one of my biggest problems.

Both

Participate in the Cram-a-thon from July 9th to the 12th

I love participating in read-a-thons, but I’m not good at following them. I blame having kids for this one. But read-a-thons are such a good way of interacting with other book lovers that I just can’t help wanting and trying to participate.

Complete 3 boxes for the Summer Bingo Card created by Pretty Deadly Reviews

Just like with read-a-thons I have a horrible time keeping track of what books I read for what challenge. I love bingo and this challenge created by Pretty Deadly Reviews is the perfect combination! So hopefully I can get 3 of the books that I am reading to fill in the spaces and by the time summer is over have a full black out bingo!

  1. I love this! I really need to start writing (and sticking to!) monthly blogging and reading goals. I’ve been in such a blogging slump lately and I think this would really help.

So far it seems to be working a lot better than trying to pick specific books and reading off of that list. It’s keeping me centered and to specific things and it’s pretty cool being able to just cross off certain things!

  2. Lol: “Just become more fucking organized” is my favorite goal of yours. I feel like this is my goal all of the time! Also, I feel like I have the opposite TBR problem: if I own the book I force myself to read it next even if it’s the last thing on earth I want to do (which often makes me resent the book I’m reading). I suppose at the end of the day we all have our issues. Ha.

Honestly, it’s the one that I suck the most at to be honest. I get to the end and I completely blank on most of the books that I read that month. Take June, I think I read like 6 books but I can only recall like three of them, one being for a tour. Kids just took it ALL OUT OF ME. I also have this insane fear of reading books that other people have loved. I get them, but when I’m staring at the cover I put it down purely because I’m afraid I won’t like it. *Sigh*
